ABOUT WGW
A GOTHIC TALE OF FRIENDSHIP & FREEDOM
This, my dear reader is no ordinary event…
Within the shadows of Whitby Abbey, amidst the haunting alleys and eerie sea cliffs a gothic tale of friendship and freedom unfolds….
Conceived in 1994 by the enigmatic Jo Hampshire who placed an ad in NME calling for like-minded individuals with a love for Goth Culture. A small group of pen-friends quickly became 200 for the very 1st Whitby Goth Weekend and has since evolved into a bi-annual rendezvous coveted by thousands of denizens of the WGW; a glorious assembly commemorating all that is gothic and evocative. For over 30 years The Whitby Goth Weekend® has beckoned the eclectic and the bohemian.

By the turn of the millenium, WGW had become not just a gathering but a diverse subcultural ecosystem. Trad Goths, Victorian Goths, SteamPunks, Cybergoths to name a few, all returned to the little seaside town year after year, united by a love of self expression all things strange and curious.
Today, Whitby Goth Weekend has become a dark jewel in the crown of the global goth scene, drawing attendees not only from across the UK but from every corner of the globe. You will find that there is no single venue or stage during Whitby Goth Weekend, for the spirit of WGW is untamed & weaves itself into every shadow and side street of Whitby. You’ll find Talks, Workshops, Parties, Art Exhibitions, Performances, Alternative Markets and Music & Meets Ups, there is something for everyone.
